- Quiet Space
Try and find them a quiet place or time to do their homework. - Pens & Equipment
Keep pens, paper, rulers etc handy. - Dictionary
Have a dictionary on hand so words can be looked up. Maybe you could buy one from the voucher we gave you. - Help
Help your child but do not do the work for them. - Talk
Talk about academy work and look in their books often. Ask questions. How does that work? What’s the difference between? It can be about anything, but keep talking. Explaining things reinforces their understanding. - Everyday Activities
Use everyday activities as learning opportunities e.g. at the supermarket, writing a shopping list, organising a birthday party, choosing a mobile phone and comparing the best tariffs. - Learn Together
Learn together, visit a local museum, library, countryside, use the internet together, attend family learning courses and get hints and tips on how to best help your child. - Watch Programmes
Watch TV and videos that are relevant to what your child is learning in school e.g. Biographies, documentaries, news, etc. - Breakfast
Make sure your child has a good breakfast. This is important as it will help with their concentration and give energy needed. - Play Games
Play educational games together e.g. scrabble, cards, dominoes, hang man, trivial pursuits, cludo, internet games, etc - Create a home where learning is encouraged.
- Set high expectations for completing homework.
- Take the time to encourage your children's strengths and find ways to support them when they struggle.
- Encourage exploration and discovery.
- Build a strong home-school partnership.
