Specialist Sports College
As a specialist sports college we strive to create the best opportunities in sport for all young people at Parkwood Academy.
The aims of the Physical Education department are to:-
- Encourage and promote sport for all, through personalised learning.
- Promote healthy lifestyles and encourage lifelong participation
- High academic achievement, ensuring every child reaches their full potential.
- Identify talent in the pursuit of excellence.
- Create opportunity for well structured extra-curricular, which removes barriers to participation.
- Create and maintain strong school-club links.
- Ensure the departmental provision meets the needs of all students in the Every Child Matters agenda.
- Lead department in cross curricular learning and whole school interventions.
The PE Department strives to offer high quality lessons both at KS3 and KS4, to ensure all students feel they are being successful in al that they do. Students in KS3 have 2 hours of Physical Activity a week and throughout the year the students follow a range of activities in a number of activities. Students are encouraged to work in groups and take the lead in certain parts of the lessons. Through leadership we encourage students to highlight other students’ strengths and weaknesses wherever possible.
At KS4 students have the option to take GCSE PE, BTEC Sport or Level 1 Sports Leadership Award. These qualifications are taken over 2 years of study in year 10 and 11. Students who choose these options will gain further time to take part in PE. During the course students will be taken for a week’s residential to take part in outdoor adventurous activities.
In 2009, all students who took GCSE PE and BTEC Sport achieved A*-C grade. This is a massive achievement for the students and reflects the high quality work that goes on in the department. Of this 14 students achieved an A* or Distinction* in their studies.
As a PE Department we have always offered high quality extra-curricular activities. This year we have extended our offer to encompass some more unusual, activities. Here at Parkwood Academy we feel that all students should be able to enjoy physical activity and have the opportunity to take part in a number of sports including;
- Football
- Cheerleading
- Netball
- Swimming
- Athletics
- Dance
- Badminton
- Basketball
- Trampoliing
- Volleyball
- Cross Country
- Cricket
- Tennis
- Rounders
- Wrestling
- Judo
- Street Dance
- Table Tennis
- Circuit Training
- Ultimate Frisbee
- Cycling/BMX
- Duke of Edinburgh
Through the specialism, the PE department will support other departments through high quality outreach programmes that aim to increase academic achievement through the medium of sport and to consistently model and share good practice. In order for the Academy to continue to be successful in all areas the department will help to raise aspirations of all students. This is done both academically and socially through the medium of sport and to use physical activity as a vehicle for raising self confidence and self esteem
Vision
To ensure all pupils at all levels have access to at least 3 hours of high quality PE and reach their potential in all that they do.
