Induction and Withdrawl
New EAL students are inducted by the EMA Department when they are introduced into the Academy and given an initial assessment to ascertain their level of English. They are attached to a tutor group and given a ‘buddy’ who preferably speaks the same first language. Relevant information is then saved on the Academy’s data system SIMS for all teaching staff to have access to it. Under Stage 2 levels students are placed into small withdrawal classes and withdrawn for extra English support during the course of the year (1 hour during the week). The aim of withdrawal is to prepare students for mainstream classes.
In Class Support
Identified students are supported in their mainstream classes with the subject teacher. The EAL teaching assistants provides the necessary support to ensure access to the curriculum. The EAL Coordinator also completes a tracking form to ensure that individual student progress is recorded.
In Year 11, For EAL students under Stage 2 levels may take exams in Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT.
