Key Stage 3 at Parkwood Academy

Year 7

Our Year 7 curriculum is based on the “Opening Minds” curriculum that has been pioneered by the Royal Society for encouragement of the Arts (RSA). Year 7 students work with their tutor for almost half the week. Within this time they have a rich programme of study based on the National Curriculum, that has literacy at its heart and focuses on developing five key skill areas:

  • Citizenship
  • Learning
  • People
  • Situations
  • Information

These are skills that we know will enable students to succeed within the academy and also later at college, university and within the workplace.

In addition to the time with their tutor Year 7 students have specialist lessons for Maths, Science, Technology, Languages and Sport.

Year 8

In Year 8 students experience a more traditional curriculum with the exception of “Fabulous Fridays”. Each Friday has a theme and the chance is taken to explore this theme in depth to further develop the key skills from Year 7.

Many of the themes are developed through the means of creative and expressive arts.

Year 9

In Year 9 students follow a programme of study based upon the National Curriculum. Many students start their GCSE or equivalent courses within Year 9 and may gain some qualifications during this year. During Year 9 students make their choices for courses in Key Stage 4.
